East Java Woman Gives Birth to ‘1-Year-Old’ Boy
A woman from Madura Island, East Java, gave birth to an 8-kilogram baby boy on Monday after a 12-month pregnancy, state news agency Antara reported on Tuesday.
The delivery was reportedly conducted without the need for a Caesarean section.
Antara reported that Siti Aminah, the baby’s mother who hails from Pamekasan district, was on Tuesday still recuperating at a local hospital after delivering her sixth child on Monday, Independence Day.
After emerging from its mother’s womb, the baby, named Wahyu Agus Perwira Putra, was in good health and had the physical appearance of a one-year-old infant.
Siti Aminah told reporters that her pregnancy had lasted three months longer than the usual nine-month term, and although during the period she had never consulted a doctor, Siti said she had had no difficulty delivering the giant baby boy.
Sumanto, the newborn’s father, said the name Wahyu meant “miracle” as his birth was considered a blessing from God, while Agus was taken from Agustus, the month in which he was born. Perwira, or officer, was derived from his father’s position in the military, while Putra was Indonesian for “son.”
Sumanto said he and his wife considered Wahyu’s birth a miracle because, despite his unusual size, the baby was delivered normally.
In January 2005, the BBC reported that a woman in Brazil gave birth to a “giant baby” weighing 8 kgs — twice the size of an average newborn.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the heaviest baby ever was born to Anna Bates of Canada in 1879. It weighed 10.8 kgs but died 11 hours after birth.
